We used to go to the Bristol Arms in Shotley a lot a few years back. Then, it was so good you had to queue to get a table. The hosts were friendly and the place welcoming. The food was out of this world! That was then....we decided to go back there for our wedding anniversary this year. What a mistake! The pub was under new management, the ambience all gone....the place was all but empty...and we soon found out why! Basically, the food was DREADFUL! The steak we ordered was fatty, badly cooked, tough as leather and smothered beyond recognition with a very bland sauce to disguise the fact that the meat was full of gristle. The meal wasn't just bad...it was evil...the worst I have ever had the misfortune to eat! We won't be going back there and I would say to anyone who is thinking of going.....DON'T! Try the pub at Pinmill instead! They, at least, have a chef that can cook!

How can you say that the Bristol Arms is only 1 mile from Hawrich. It is if you are one of the lucky one's with a boat. It take a good 1 hours drive to get to Harwich from Shotly, and thats if the roads are clear.

I`ve been to this pub many, many times with friends, my kids and my husband. If you get to know everyone it makes all the difference, as they are very friendly as it`s a family run buisness. The food is lovely; The fish is all local caught, so fresh. The disabled toilets are a godsend, big and roomy for my wheels. The cappuccinno is the best in Suffolk!

The Bristol Arms is not a bad place but it is overpriced for what you get. Yes you get a nice view whilst you eat but I'd rather drive that little further to Felixstowe and sit with a bag of chips on the front for a fraction of the cost.

visited in oct 2006. asked for liver and onions in gravy. not enjoyed liver WAS NOT cooked in gravy so was very very dry, a little gravy was just poured over the top.whole meal wasnt good, havent been back since, also it had dirty walls all smokey and brown and stunk. hope it was better when you others went!!!!! were put on own in restaurant part, pub nearly empty. not a good sign. didnt know they had a website or would have written before. dont think we will visit agin.

I went to the bristol arms with my partner, lovely location were serving food all day, we being desperatly hungry on a sunday after 6pm, after looking at the menu for a considerable amount of time, I said everything boasts about being deep fried! not exactly what i we were looking for, don't get me wrong there were salads But i feel £9 for a salad is extortionate, if it were a fine dining restaurant then yes, but the bristol arms is not!there were vegartarian options a chick pea cottage pie and brie and onion tart but all were served with chips. we settled for the gammon, egg and chips, the service was fine, the time it took to serve our dinner was fine, but i did not expect my dinner to swim! if grease is what you want then the Bristol Arms is for you, if you want edible food it is not!

I have been visiting the Bristol Arms for several years and have always enjoyed it my favourite being the mussels in white wine and garlic (exactly as advertised). I recently found out I am a celliac (cant have gluten) and the Bristol Arms has the best availabilty in the area I can have fish and chips gluten free this is fantastic, amongst many other available meals. Can't fault the place it's wonderful
