Dave Lever must of been lucky getting served when he visited! I went in at 5 last night, not the busiest of times, got served OK first time. However, on a second visit to the bar just b4 6pm waiting behind about four others...the barmaid looked totally disinterested, served a couple of the other guys (the other had walked out by now),then ignored two young girls who were waiting b4 me, to serve two other girls who had just walked up to the bar! The 2 girls finally got served, I thought I'm next, but no, four six foot Geordies come in and she serves them first! I said I'd been waiting longer than them, she looked at me as if I'd been invisible!! Swore, and walked out...went to The Golden Lion..totally different attitude, the Duty Manager apologised to me three times for keeping me waiting while he corrected an error on the till. Over two years since I'd been in The Cricketers...will be more the next time I enter the place if ever again.!!!

This is a most comfortable pub next to the Tower Ramparts bus station/shopping centre, serving traditional beers and food in comfortable surroundings and at decent prices. You may have to wait a few minutes to get served at busy times, but it is worth it.
The place is nearly always busy, so expect to wait a few minutes to get served. You can get a full English Breakfast - or a pint - at 9:30 am. The beer is particularly good, there is plenty of choice, and you will be hard pressed to find cheaper drink in Ipswich. It is part of the Weatherspoon empire - and that brewery can be proud of it.
There is a reasonable menu at decent prices, and families are catered for up until 5/6pm.
Smokers are particularly well catered for, with 2 gardens and dozens of tables outdoors, with about 4/5 with heaters that are left to the customers to switch on at will!
For those who like a traditional English pub,
then apart from the lack of an open fire, this is it. Settees; no juke box; fruit machines sound turned down to minimum; good beer; best prices; kids in their own place. The lot.
I would feel quite happy about my wife going
there at lunchtime for a meal and a drink on her own - and there are not many pubs you can say that about nowadays....

In response to the post below I would like to ask Mr Cobboldallover why he thinks that the high fat, high salt and high sugar content of convience foods represent good value. Am I realy the foolish one? Anyway I'm pleased to hear that his son does have a varied diet. Happy New year to you and please remember good wholesome food for your kids, weather eating out or at home, is more important that what real ale is you.
I will add however a good pint of real ale is the best drink and I reccommend the Dove for a varied choice of ales from all over the country, or The Greyhound who are unbeatable if you love the full range from Adnams Brewery.

Well, there is a difference between 'cheap' and 'good value' and I'd rather take him there than Maccy D's or the Burger King any day. Ultimately my boy gets a good varied diet both at home and when we eat out, so your criticisms are slightly foolish. (Although I always feel slightly silly when he asks for a burger without the brown bit in the middle!)

The post below amuses me somewhat. Mr 'cobboldedallover'appears to be someone who enjoys real ales and quality bottled beers, but he obviously doesn't give a f**k what s**t food he puts down his or his sons' neck as long as it's cheap! I bet he goes to Tesco and buy cheap canned lager on the quiet.

An average Weatherspoons joint, distinguished by it's choice of real ales & even better selection of bottled beer including the aforementioned Kopperburg, Westons Victoria Ale & lot's of other stuff you won't see anywhere else. Took my son in for a bite to eat & the food was great. I don't care if it was microwaved - at that price it was incredible value and we both loved it - and he's a fussy bu**er!

This is a good sized pub with a basic emphasis... cheap options. That said I do visit as they have an excellant variety of Koppenberg ciders, very affordable wine and this is a great start to an evening, ie doesn't burst the bank balance before heading to other bars for more ambience.
The food is too basic for me but the muffins go down well with a bargain cuppa tea!

Good cheap pub. I really like the food here. The staff are always friendly to me. I occasionally come here with my babe and staff have always helped out a lot.

I am not a picky person, but the food here was just awful. I ordered the mixed grill, and you could barely cut through the meat. I ordered pepper sauce, but had to go and ask for it to receive it, and we were like the only guests in the whole place. Prices were ok, but I would rather have added a pound or two and received something that you could actually eat. Creamy pepper sauce and jacked potato were ok thou. Girl behind the bar not overly friendly.
