Town Centre 20 MPH Speed Limit Scheme

(20)[Map showing area affected by new speed restrictions]Now in force

As part of the Town Centre Improvements the Local Transport Plan for Ipswich, it was approved when considering the bus gyratory that the whole of the town centre should be restricted to 20-MPH speed limit. The town centre being defined as that area bounded by the following streets, Crown Street, St Margaret's Street, Bond Street, Waterworks Street, Star Lane, Greyfriars Road, Franciscan Way and Civic Drive.

This area covers the main shopping streets where the greatest number of pedestrians is present and traffic speeds are generally low. The speed limit will help to reinforce the need for drivers to be aware of pedestrians.

There are very few places where speeds in excess of 20 mph can be maintained within this area and the number of pedestrians is high particularly during the day. The introduction of a 20 mph speed limit over the whole area of the town centre streets would enable signs on the entry points to indicate that this is a special 20 mph zone and would emphasise the need for drivers to reduce speed.
